The 2021 Roy Estate Cabernet Sauvignon commands the spotlight with its arresting color, exhilarating bouquet, and assertive presence on the palate. Inky and intensely saturated from rim to core in the glass, the wine exudes confidence with densely concentrated blackcurrant and blackberry notes. Clove and allspice follow to provide an exotic complement to the substantial dark fruit. Most notable, however, is a distinct mineral, gravelly aspect that rises from the glass.

It is this mineral quality that defines the 2021 Roy Estate Cabernet Sauvignon, further revealing graphite, slate and petrichor. This is a wine clearly born from the singular volcanic hillsides of Roy Estate, with earth, soil and stone at its core. Classically structured in the style of Bordeaux’s Left Bank, it boasts firm, robust tannins and notable acidity, promising a wine built for the ages. This may be the longest-lived Roy Estate Grand Cru to date—expect it to evolve elegantly and reveal increasingly complex layers over the next 25 years.

For optimum enjoyment of this wine, please decant and serve at about 60 °F.

The 2019 Roy Estate Cabernet Sauvignon is a wine of grace and purpose owing to its elegant bouquet and powerful palate presence. It demonstrates the noble structure found only in Grands Crus grown in hillside, volcanic soils. The bouquet presents classic Roy Estate blueberry and cassis, yet the aromatics evolve toward the minerality of this vintage with graphite and sanguine notes also emerging. Enviable freshness in the form of fresh herbs—thyme, tarragon—prime the palate and invite the first sip.

On the palate, the 2019 Roy Estate Cabernet Sauvignon shows admirable balance and density, as its deeply layered nature quickly asserts itself. Those initial notes of fresh tarragon transform into anise and black licorice. Even more intriguingly, that enigmatic sanguine quality turns darker and more concentrated, evoking iron ore and crushed igneous rocks. The finish is dynamic and lingering, recalling mint and even a touch of eucalyptus. The 2019 Roy Estate Cabernet Sauvignon embodies finesse above all else, the silky tannins framing out the wine and ensuring it will develop gracefully for at least 20 years.

For optimum enjoyment of this wine, please decant and serve at about 60 °F.

The 2018 Roy Estate Cabernet Sauvignon is an opulent expression of this bountiful and acclaimed vintage. Harvesting until the very last days of October exclusively from our hillside vineyard blocks allowed for the development of exceptionally robust and complex aromatics. Dark cherry, black plum and blueberry notes cascade decadently from the glass, while wild mountain herbs like thyme, mint and fennel promise freshness.

Our patience during harvest was paired with a deliberately extended period resting the grapes on their skins in the winery. The result is a wine of substantial body and powerful resonance. After an initial flood of ripe, dark fruit, the 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon intrigues with notes of toasted grains and dried hay. Evoking golden fields on a warm autumn day, this comforting mid-palate complements warm, lingering tones of roasted coffee beans and baking spices on the finish. Exceptionally focused tannins, a signature of our hillside blocks, provide precise structure and the ability to age for the next 15-20 years.

For optimum enjoyment of this wine, please decant and serve at about 60 °F.

The classic and elegant 2017 Roy Estate Cabernet Sauvignon evokes a globe-spanning journey from Napa Valley’s remote hillsides to Bordeaux’s Left Bank. The wine’s core notes of stone and wet earth are a clear expression of the volcanic soils found on our single vineyard site—it is this mineral quality that is highly reminiscent of the Left Bank’s finest. From this bedrock, the wine blooms to present an exotic bouquet of cinnamon, cardamom, nutmeg, toasted oak and dried violets.

Lively on the palate, it offers dense raspberry, blueberry and blackcurrant framed by vibrant acidity and persistent layers of firm tannins. The defining freshness of the 2017 vintage is exquisitely preserved here while also demonstrating substantial power. Nowhere is this more evident than in the wine’s lingering finish that recalls freshly roasted coffee beans and cocoa. The wine delivers great pleasure today owing to its expressiveness, but its promise will only grow for the next 15-20 years.

For optimum enjoyment of this wine, please decant and serve at about 60 °F.

This is truly a classic Roy Estate Cabernet. The exquisite nose reveals a dense mix of aromas of black cherry, blueberries, blackberries and floral with a subtle, sultry smokiness. It evolves on the mid-palate with beautifully textured layers of concentrated black bramble fruits, black currant, dark and dense cocoa nibs, and slate. Those full layers of textures are complimented by the signature Roy well-integrated, silky tannins and great purity which linger on the palate. 2014 is another stellar expression of this unique vineyard location which will age beautifully and yet can be appreciated and enjoyed right now with decanting.

Mother Nature not only set the pace for 2011, but also dictated extremely low yields. Roy harvested 16 tons (less than 1 ton per acre, 1 cluster per shoot). We crafted a very special wine that is distinctive with beautiful body and color, very refined and super expressive. There is an intensity in the nose that just jumps out of the glass. These aromatics reveal red fruit, wild berries, chocolate cherry and a little floral that is layered with sweeter dried herb and underforest notes in the background. Complimenting the fruit aromatics are very expressive aromas that include French vanilla oak, almond, nutmeg and exotic spices with layers of stone minerality that really explode from the glass. The 2011 Cabernet Sauvignon is so very interesting and intriguing both aromatically and texturally on the palate; finishing with those signature Roy Estate silky and smooth tannins. It’s got wonderful richness, good mouth feel, intense precision, elegance as harmonious, layered and polished. A very unique expressive wine crafted in a very unique challenging vintage. People are going to really enjoy this wine!

This rich and bold wine exhibits a dense mix of aromas that include blackberry preserves, blueberries, black currants, anise, espresso and cocoa with a touch of minerality. It is enhanced with its expression of hoisin and soy among the concentrated dark, ripe fruit notes. Those layered purple fruit and deep dark licorice flavors envelope the mouth with intense inky and velvety tannins, followed by a wonderful long, lingering finish. As this 2010 evolves in my glass, it is signature Roy Cabernet Sauvignon; seductive and powerful, yet harmonious, showing that wonderful richness and purity of flavor from this unique and special property.

In 2009, the mini-valley of Roy Estate produced very small yields resulting in exquisite, extremely concentrated wines. This very impressive dark ink colored wine is gorgeous from the beginning with an intense and powerful nose of licorice, Asian spices, sweet black cherry and kirsch. It evolves on the mid-palate with beautiful textured layers of black concentrated fruits and then, this seamless wine finishes with refined tannins, more dark fruits, French vanilla oak notes and a great purity that lingers on the palate. This stunning 2009 Cabernet Sauvignon is yet another example of style and purity that has become the benchmark of consistency from this special Estate.

The 2008 Cabernet Sauvignon is very expressive with notes of perfume, floral, spice, mineral and blackberry that are layered beautifully together. The dry and cold spring induced small yields with small berry size and light clusters which created some amazingly concentrated wines. The very mild summer helped develop complex aromatics as well. The nose reveals intense yet refined flavors of polished flowers (violet and rose petals), cranberry and black licorice. This beautiful complex and aromatic mix is complimented by a seductive mouthfeel with loads of black fruits, fresh stones and spices seamlessly integrated with layers of expressive, refined tannins and a long, lingering finish.
