The Roy Estate property offers two distinct sites on one small estate – “akin to the Right Bank and the Left Bank in Bordeaux,” describes Melka.
A creek divides the parcel planted with Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Petit Verdot.
On one side, classic volcanic soil produces smaller, low-yielding vines that generate wines with powerful tannins, while on the other side deeper, loamy, alluvial soils support bigger and stronger vines that bear more generous, profound, layered wines.
Meanwhile, the cooler overall conditions of the gentle slopes at the base of Atlas Peak provide a more Old World tannic structure with a clear focus on the purity of the fruit.
